our art courses

artistGuests are welcome to come for periods of one week, two weeks or of course for more than that.

The working day normally lasts from 9.30 in the morning until approximately 5.00 in the evening, with a two-hour lunch rest during the hottest part of the day and little breaks for tea and coffee (or occasionally something slightly stronger) every now and then.

The structured programme below is for those who will find it useful. Those who prefer a more independent approach are of course welcome to work at their own rhythm.

Example Weekly Program

Day 1 - Monday

Guests arrive at 'Hotel Boyadjiski' in the afternoon or evening.

Day 2 - Tuesday

The first half of the morning of day one will be taken up with an introduction to the basic techniques and principles of how to compose a landscape painting. We will look at where to place the horizon line, how to lead the eye into the picture, the placing of focal points, the application of the 'golden section' and other matters relating to the initial laying out of your picture.

We shall then drive to the valley and simply wander around the landscape with our sketchbooks seeking out the ideal view-points.

On the afternoon of the first day we shall again drive out to the location and begin work on laying out our designs in a thin solution of sepia.

Day 3 -Wednesday

We will begin the second day in the studio, looking at what we did on the previous afternoon and thinking of how to develop and improve our compositions. After that we will look at how other artists have used tone and light and shade in their work so that we can set about applying tone to our own pictures on location after lunch.

Day 4 - Thursday

Day three will be spent entirely in the landscape; once we are happy with what we have done in line and in tone we will be able to start 'laying in' fields of 'under-colour' in preparation for the application of the 'surface layers'.

Day 5 - Friday

artist On the morning of day four, again working directly in the fields, we can start building up a more substantial body of colour, establishing our hues and going a little into surface treatment.

By this time you will need a short break from hard work and in the afternoon we shall enjoy a visit to the historical town centre, seeing some of the museums, visiting the church and having a little to eat and drink in the famous Dedo Penne Inn.

Day 6 - Saturday

We shall spend the morning of day five in the studio having a careful look at what we have done so far and developing our ideas and colour schemes away from the subject.

After lunch we shall return to the field to develop our work further, working directly from life.

Day 7 - Sunday

dobarsko On day six we shall visit the nearby village of Dobarsko in the morning. The village is the home of a small and very ancient Orthodox Church with extremely original and dynamic frescoes that are now national treasures.

The afternoon will see a return to work in the valley where we shall try to perfect our colour arrangements and fine-tune the details and the surface texture.

Day 8 - Monday

The first hour or so of the final morning will be spent in the studio where we can contemplate our work at leisure and apply the final touches to our compositions. Then we can all relax and drive up the Vikren Mountain and view the spectacular lakes near the summit as a well-earned final treat.
